Backyard Garden Landscaping Ideas

A backyard is an extension of the activities that take place inside your house. It's usually more colorful, informal, and enjoyable, with the options limited only by the landscape, your creative talents, and your DIY know-how.

You may always engage a landscape designer or architect to help you achieve the full potential of your outside area. A knowledgeable specialist can assist you in determining a style, determining who will use the yard, establishing activity zones, selecting materials and plants, and suggesting builders and contractors for anything from swimming pools to outdoor buildings to irrigation installation.

Explore ideas for transforming your backyard into your favorite spot.

1. Multi-Use Yard

How do you create a safe, entertaining, and appealing backyard for kids and parents? The backyard contains dining and lounging areas, as well as a grass-covered berm and interactive sculptures for the kids.

Redwood can be used to construct the fence and the bench. The fence is lightly stained, but the seat is untreated. Podocarpus (plum pines) were planted for seclusion and to offer foliage. The youngsters can roll, tumble, and enjoy the backyard thanks to the no-mow fescue planted on the berm. On the flat portions of the lawn, durable bluegrass is planted, and a small patio is built out of repurposed brick. The oak benches include a storage room for outdoor toys, allowing you to make the most of your area.

2. Eichler Remodel

Thousands of California housing tract houses were developed by developer Joseph Eichler in the 1950s and 1960s. His name has become synonymous with the style known as midcentury modern.

The goal was to create flat, usable outdoor living areas by linking the various floors via terraces and staircases. This garden softens the angular landscape design and gives the backyard a more modern vibe by emphasizing texture, strong shapes, and colors.

3. Woodland Garden

If you want to expand their living space to take advantage of the lovely wooded environment just outside their back door, this is perfect. The rear porch was redesigned to step down to an adjacent elevated bluestone patio. With native plants, an outdoor fireplace, a koi pond, a shade garden, and an uneven bluestone walk. The designer constructed a sequence of outdoor rooms that transition from a highly built environment to a natural setting.

Viburnum dentatum, pink blooming astilbe 'Vision in Pink,' malus 'Whitney,' Buxus 'Green Mountain,' golden grass Hakonechloa 'Aureola,' Pennisetum 'Hameln,' and the tree Betula 'Whitespire' are among the plants selected for the landscape.

4. Ornate Courtyard

The focal point of this courtyard garden is a big water basin. The English garden reflected their prior residence's aesthetics. Green Tree Garden Design created a courtyard with a water feature in one corner and a new summerhouse in the other corner, all visible from the courtyard sitting area, using traditional Middle Eastern garden design concepts. They finished the project by replacing the plants with species that provide year-round jewel-tone hues, texture, and fragrance.

5. A Midcentury Modern With 'Wow' Factor

In this design, the post-and-beam structure is kept while adding a garage, cabana, and gym, as well as a private patio for the main suite.

6. Stage in the Backyard

The inside and outside of the residence are linked by a long, floating seat. The children of the family like climbing the stairwells that connect the two slate-covered patios. The upper terrace serves as a platform for spontaneous performances.

7. Transitions

Landscape designers may be a tremendous help in renovating a place as children grow up or leave the home.

The huge trees were removed, and the lawn was redesigned to include bigger borders and a romantic planting pattern. A porch-style swing settee was installed in lieu of the children's swing. Near the home, a water feature creates a natural transition from the inside to the terrace.

8. Water-Conserving, Multi-Purpose Yard

You may replace the grass with elevated stacked-stone planter boxes for producing vegetables and herbs in this landscape. In the Los Angeles region, this drought-resistant landscape design now incorporates seats, a fire pit, containers placed on decomposed granite gravel, and concrete stepping stones.
